A highly functional democracy

I think we’re all asking the questions. Is democracy failing? Has our democracy been hacked? How could that happen? What do we do about it? Are there other options? How do we let go of the patriarchy? If we do, can we really thrive in a democracy where everyone gets a say? Well, I’m not about to answer those questions for you. I am going to share something I’ve recently gotten to observe that proves to be a highly functional democracy where I see my little boy thriving every day. Even at home, he is thriving again after several years of struggle and resistance around the school and lots of other things, including not getting his way about something he wanted to do that us as parents did not. What he is experiencing at school, he is bringing home and teaching us how to better hear each other’s’ voices and take votes to make choices that best represent the desires of the group, while ensuring everyone’s ideas get recognized. How self-directed learning impacts volunteering

Democratic School

One neat perk of self-directed learning is that students discover who they are and where they “fit in.” Knowing their niche can help them give back to others because they are self-aware of their strengths, weaknesses, and interests. For example, one professor and researcher noted three types of citizens:

  1. Personally responsible citizens who like to help people they know, such as donating blood.
  2. Participatory citizens are involved in community projects, like beautifying the streets.
  3. Justice-oriented citizens help invent solutions to the problems in society, such as how to house and provide necessities for incoming refugees.

With this knowledge, our school can help students find their passion, get involved early, and change the world!

Make the Right Choice the Easy Choice

In theory, self-directed learning should be very natural and very easy. As a lifelong unschooler, I shouldn’t even have to think about it. After all, you will always be educating yourself, whether you try to or not and whether you like it or not. But the unavoidable instinct to follow curiosity is only fifty percent of it; it’s too easy to ignore your instincts.

Status Update on the 1st Democratic Free School in DFW

So much has happened in the last couple of months. As we have been talking with people in the community it has become obvious that we need to spend some time really sharing the message of democratic free education. So many people assume that we are a "charter school." Therefore, we made the decision to remove the word "school" from our name and became simply: Makarios Learning Community. And that is just what we are; a community learning together in a happy, relaxed environment.

Makarios Community School - A Place for Everyone

One of best things about Makarios is the sense of community. Everyone knows each other, everyone helps each other, and everyone has a place in our school- except when they don’t, because they’re new. A prospective student’s trial week and a new student’s first few days can be some of the most interesting things to experience at Makarios, and it really solidifies the sense of community each and every time.

Not long ago “at-risk youth” could be defined as a young person exposed to a daily onslaught of gangs, drugs, and violence within a single-parent, low income demographic.  According to the organization: At-Risk Youth Programs, behaviors that result in “dangerous lifestyles” are often the result of stress that kids experience.  In recent years we have seen a shift in demographics of at-risk youth.  With the stress of school, extra-curricular activities, learning differences, and ever-increasing mandates to test and measure progress, our kids are being medicated and go to therapy to “normalize” outcomes.  As a result, our education system in America has created an entire population of at-risk youth from every demographic!
