So much has happened in the last couple of months. As we have been talking with people in the community it has become obvious that we need to spend some time really sharing the message of democratic free education. So many people assume that we are a "charter school." Therefore, we made the decision to remove the word "school" from our name and became simply: Makarios Learning Community. And that is just what we are; a community learning together in a happy, relaxed environment.

Makarios Community School - A Place for Everyone

Screen_Shot_2016-09-10_at_2

One of best things about Makarios is the sense of community. Everyone knows each other, everyone helps each other, and everyone has a place in our school- except when they don’t, because they’re new. A prospective student’s trial week and a new student’s first few days can be some of the most interesting things to experience at Makarios, and it really solidifies the sense of community each and every time.

The benefits of mindfulness

The benefits of mindfulness

IMG_1737-min

So why practice mindfulness?  As we take time to be present to our experiences, and practice focusing on the present, we actually rewire our brains by creating new neural networks.  What are neural networks, you ask? When we learn behavior (how to swim, how to write the alphabet, how to drive a car) we create a neural network in the brain--neural networks, essentially, are neurons collecting signals from others and this creates an electric activity that creates connective branches in the brain.

Blue Ridge’s Footsteps Program Continues to Evolve by Enriching Family Involvement

3-7-16 G4 (1)

Blue Ridge first opened our Footsteps group for pre-teens in 2006, as one of the first wilderness therapy programs to work with this younger adolescent age group. It has always been developmentally focused to fit the needs of 10-14 year-olds, with an emphasis on nurturing these kids through every interaction. Our field staff balance supporting students through tasks while not rescuing them from what needs to be done. In this way, our students develop new skills while having the “safety net” of caring adults. We are a co-ed group led by co-ed field staff. This mirrors the traditional school setting where students develop their communication skills and build healthy relationships with peers and staff of different genders. These young students spend most days backpacking, but every ten days, they get to regroup and spend time at our hybrid base camp, called The Fort.

Supporting At-Risk Students

Not long ago “at-risk youth” could be defined as a young person exposed to a daily onslaught of gangs, drugs, and violence within a single-parent, low income demographic.  According to the organization: At-Risk Youth Programs, behaviors that result in “dangerous lifestyles” are often the result of stress that kids experience.  In recent years we have seen a shift in demographics of at-risk youth.  With the stress of school, extra-curricular activities, learning differences, and ever-increasing mandates to test and measure progress, our kids are being medicated and go to therapy to “normalize” outcomes.  As a result, our education system in America has created an entire population of at-risk youth from every demographic!

MLK

The community’s foundation is self-government. During our community meetings, we discuss a variety of topics including the school fiscal report, clubs, field trips, interests and issues. We follow Robert’s Rules of Order during our meetings. As a community the members create and vote upon the constitution and amendments of our school. It is this set of rules that govern our community. These rules define the areas in which our personal freedoms should not impose on the freedoms of the community. Students and mentors learn boundaries, respect, character, debate and consequences within this system.

Mindfulness: Getting Grounded in Wilderness Therapy

Mindfullness

Although you’ve probably heard that mindfulness is currently a therapeutic “buzz word”, it is truly a practice that has been around for thousands of years. It has its roots in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, but also in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In addition to it being rooted in these religious traditions, it also has been embraced and popularized by secular institutions.

5 Things You Should Know About Your Kid’s Brain Throughout Childhood

Human-Brain-Development-1

As a parent, you have the privilege to watch your child grow and mature throughout life. It starts with hearing their first heartbeat to holding their tiny hand, supporting them through their first crush, cheering them on through their graduation from college and beyond. You dream of their future and do your best to help them be successful. No parent wants their child to suffer or be unprepared for their life, right? One of the major components of success as an adult is that the foundation was laid in your childhood to know how to think, plan and cope with life. I wish I had taken the time when mine were little to understand the importance of their brain formation and development.
