Parent Teacher Conferences at a Democratic Free School?

Parent Teacher Conferences at a Democratic-Free School? Our students have thoughtful, caring, proactive parents. Some of them are new to (or even puzzled by!) this unconventional way of doing school; others feel that it fits like the glove they’ve been waiting for.  Many of our parents have spent several seasons in a homeschool or unschooling mode, while some have been on a quest for alternative education in forms of self-directed learning, hack schooling or project based learning.  Whatever the case it is our pleasure to meet them exactly where they are along their parenting journey in a way that will benefit their student. After all, they know them even better than we do—their insights are unparalleled!   This connection between staff and parents takes a variety of forms. Would you be surprised if I told you THIS is the food our students are eating?

The traditional backpacker’s diet is known for dried meat, pasta, beans, and grains. Not exactly a rainbow of colorful fruits and veggies! At Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness our pursuit of the best possible nutrition for our students is constantly evolving. We work alongside a nutritionist to identify the optimal combination of calorie density, nutrients, protein, and carbohydrates to support the activity of backpacking without loading up on sugar and processed foods. This is challenging because we also have the concern of weight as well as traditional foodie favorites of our staff and students. Continue Reading

The makarios path to self directed learning

Maslow’s famous hierarchy of needs is an excellent example of the “upside-down” educational approach that we employ atMakarios Community School. Just as an individual must build upon earlier foundations of physiological well-being, safety, belonging and self-esteem to reach the pinnacle of self-actualization, there are building blocks to becoming an autonomous, self-directed lifelong learner.
